Annular Eclipse, 2012 |
||
| Sirius Travel is looking for a few adventurous people to join us as we tour through the astronomical sites of the American Southwest on our way to view an annular eclipse of the sun on May 20, 2012. The expedition will begin from Los Angeles California, proceed by air conditioned motor coach to each site, and conclude with a flight back to Los Angeles. The primary modern astronomical sites included on the tour are Mt. Wilson, Palomar, Kitt Peak, and Lowell Observatories. We will travel through some of the richest geologic areas of the U.S. as well as the heart of Indian Country and we will see the Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater, Sunset Crater, Painted Desert, and several Indian reservations - exploring ancient Indian sites along the way. The ancient people that lived in this area were deeply interested in astronomy and the movement of the heavens for both religious and agricultural reasons. Many of the ruins and petroglyphs that we will see during this tour have well known astronomical alignments. While in Los Angeles - we will arrange a night of viewing using only an eyepiece on the famous 60" telescope at Mt. Wilson Observatory. This is an opportunity too unique to miss! Once the largest in the world, this telescope's biggest claim to fame is that it was used by Edwin Hubble during his preliminary research to discover the expanding universe. Clear skies are the norm in the San Gabriel Mountains and this is always an unforgetable night of observing! Click here to find out more about this great tour!
